As you step out of the airport in any country, everyone will have their first impression of the country. My first impressions of Japan are through my observations and personal experience in Japan.

Upon reaching Tokyo, as I walked towards the arrival hall. I was stunned by the size of Narita Airport, the cleanliness of the washroom and the huge transparent glass panel overlooking those big birds (Aeroplane). One of the best airport for airplane viewing, I love it!

Narita Airport to Tokyo station: Narita Express

The most convenient way to reach Tokyo from Narita Airport is by Narita Express. Through JR Narita Express, there is direct transportation to Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Yokohama stations which are areas that are often accessed by travellers or stations for easy transfer to your next destination.

Travelereve Tips: Purchase your round tickets at JR office at Narita Aiport to save time. The total train duration to Tokyo station is approximately 1hr.

First Impressions of Japan #1: Lesser tall buildings in Japan

As the train leaves Narita Airport, my very first impression of Japan is there aren’t many tall buildings. It was an unusual sight for me as in many cities like Singapore, you will be greeted by swarms of tall buildings due to space constraints. Lesser tall buildings in Japan could be due to the frequent earthquake would happen so it’s safer to build low houses and buildings.

The Narita Express swiftly passed by several low and small to medium-sized houses scattered around. Tall buildings are only seen in the urban city area in Tokyo. However, I kinda like this feeling, even the passed-by view seems like a postcard view to me.

First Impression of Japan #2: Small hotel room

The next thing that struck me is my first impression of the size of Japanese hotel rooms. Take a look at the walking path, isn’t it too narrow?! The entire hotel room is so small that there isn’t much space left to unpack your luggage. Unpacking and laying down your luggage is a problem because you will have even lesser space to walk which makes the whole room so squeezy!

Travelereve Tip: To have a larger size hotel room, you can book the twin room or Triple room for 2 pax instead. The twin room or Triple room can actually fit 3 people in a room so the size of the hotel room is bigger. If hotel room space constraint is a problem to you, I would recommend you to book these rooms instead of the double room.

First impression of Japan #3: Super convenient train station

Everyone knows how convenient is the public transportation in Japan. Just by looking at the subway lines in Tokyo are like spider webs! Even the locals need a subway app to navigate them the line and station to transfer or alight. So, we will skip how convenient is the public transport.

While my first impression of Japan’s train station is really super convenient. With many convenience store kiosks selling different kinds of snacks, souvenirs, bento and drinks in the train station where you can buy them before boarding the Shinkansen!

The coolest thing that I have seen is Japan is, there are even ramen standing shop in the Tokyo station. Filled your stomach first with a bowl of ramen before boarding Shinkansen. How convenient!

3 First Impressions of Japan: Tokyo City

My other first impression of Japan is Japan is a very clean country with the rubbish bin that can hardly be found on the streets. Makes me always wonder how did the government manage to educate the citizen so well!

Apart from that, what amazed me are how clean the public toilets can be! In every toilet that I went in Japan, it is always so clean, no mess and no weird smell!

What is your first impression of Japan?! Look forward to more updates about my Japan trip!
