Ryokan kyoto Airbnb: Kyoto Machiya Accommodation
Choosing to stay in a Ryokan kyoto Airbnb is probably one of the best choice made when we choose an accommodation to stay in Kyoto. Staying in a traditional Ryokan is slightly more expensive on a per night basis.
Spicing up our Kyoto trip by experiencing staying at a local neighbourhood. I found a traditional Machiya airbnb with a pinch of modernize style. A traditional Machiya in Kyoto provides the closest stay experience to a traditional Ryokan.
We had difficulty in picking a well-preserved traditional Ryokan that enables us to experience a wholesome Japanese culture and hospitality. From sleeping on futon mattress (Tatami Bed) to wearing yukata while indulging kaiseki dinner (Ryokan dinner). Kaiseki dinner is a traditional multi-course dinner that is served in your room’s dining area where everyone sits on the floor during dinner.
These days, some of the traditional Ryokan is losing its authentic traditional Japanese Ryokan stay experience. Kaiseki dinner are served at a common dining area with normal tables and chairs. Even the futon mattress is forgone with bed instead.

Fusion Ryokan Kyoto Airbnb near Kyoto Station
On a free and easy trip in Japan, it’s a wise option to stay near the train station to save transportation time and the hassle of pushing around your heavy luggage. Our Ryokan Kyoto Airbnb nearest station is Tambaguchi station (丹波口駅) which is only a stop away from Kyoto station.
Kinda loving the chance upon the old school train station. Strong Japanese anime feel~
Kyoto is a city with cycling culture and the streets are also very bike-friendly. Separated walking lanes and bike lanes are seen at the local neighbourhood’s street. Interestingly, when we explored Kyoto in a more local perspective. It creates a closer touch to the locals.
Kyoto Machiya: Maplecottage Four Seasons
With so many different choices of Kyoto accommodations, staying in a Machiya is definitely a wise option! Looking for a budget-friendly Ryokan in Kyoto, consider staying in a Machiya instead.
Machiya is a traditional wooden townhouse in Kyoto with more than 100 years of history. A traditional Machiya also preserves its authenticity of a ryokan yet providing other necessities such as laundry facilities, microwaves, fridge & etc. Bringing more convenience to travellers.
Interior of a Machiya or a traditional Ryokan Airbnb
The interior of this Machiya is similar to a typical traditional Ryokan. Traditionally designed with tatami mat floors, sliding shoji doors and even a Japanese garden in the living room. Except no onsen facilities is provided in a Machiya.
Our Machiya has a Kotatsu (Japanese Heated Table) to warm ourselves during the cold season! The Kotatsu is extremely cozy as it comes with a mattress. It helps to keep warm by hiding your hands and legs inside the Kotatsu.
Where to stay in Kyoto ryokan
Maplecottage Four Seasons is a 2 storey family-friendly Machiya, accommodating up to 8 pax. They provide 2 comfy beds and several futons mattress. The futon mattress is really comfy doesn’t make us feel like sleeping on the floor. Heaters are also provided to keep us warm in the night as Kyoto can be quite cold during Spring.
Maplecottage Four Seasons allured us strongly with its traditional exterior and interior Japanese architecture. Soaking in this rich Japanese culture ambience and the opportunity to experience sleeping on futons mattress without splurging too much money makes our stay a comfortable one.
Maplecottage Four Seasons is always on high demand so either you book it fast or it gets sold out quickly! The owner is also very thoughtful to provide free bicycles to let us cycle around! Traditional breakfast is also served upon additional charge.
The only cons of this Machiya is there is only one bathroom. However, the bathroom is built spaciously and in a very typical Japanese style! A stool with a washbowl and even a bathtub is found, letting us to bath relaxingly. Watch my Kyoto vlog above for a detailed room tour!
Sadly, I didn’t have a chance to experience the authentic traditional ryokan stay during this Japan trip. I can’t stop imagining soaking in the natural onsen while viewing the captivating scenery. That would be a perfect stay too~
